Tandas tersumbat (a blocked toilet) is one of the most common plumbing problems in Kuala Lumpur homes and condos. The good news is that many blockages are close to the bowl and can be cleared with the right tool. The key is not to make it worse: never keep flushing a toilet that is already filling up.
What to do first
- Stop flushing. If the water is rising, lift the cistern lid and close the flush valve or turn off the stop valve behind the toilet.
- Protect the floor with old towels in case it overflows.
- Wait a few minutes. A slow-draining bowl sometimes clears on its own if the blockage is soft.
How to clear it safely
- Use a flange plunger (the type with an extra rubber sleeve) and make a tight seal over the outlet before pushing.
- Plunge with steady, firm strokes 10 to 15 times, then check if the water drains.
- Hot (not boiling) water with a little dish soap can help soften a soft blockage. Boiling water can crack the porcelain.
- A toilet auger can reach blockages further along the trap if plunging does not work.
What not to do
- Do not pour strong chemical drain cleaners into a toilet. They rarely clear solid blockages and can damage pipes and seals.
- Do not push wire hangers into the bowl. They scratch the porcelain and can wedge the blockage tighter.
- Do not keep flushing to force it through. This is how most overflows happen.
Signs of a bigger drain problem
If the floor trap gurgles or backs up when you flush, if several toilets or drains are slow at the same time, or if the toilet keeps blocking every few weeks, the problem is probably further down the waste pipe or in a shared stack. Wet wipes, sanitary items and tissue paper are frequent causes. In condos, tell your management office if neighbours have the same issue.
