What is the difference between rodding and water jetting?

Accepted Answer

Rodding pushes a flexible rod or auger through the pipe to break or pull out a blockage, which works well for soft chokes and short runs. Water jetting blasts the pipe wall with high pressure water, which strips out grease, scale and sludge along the whole length. We use jetting for grease traps and long sewage lines because rodding alone often leaves the coating that chokes the pipe again.

How often should a grease trap be cleaned?

Clean a grease trap every one to three months for a home kitchen, and as often as weekly for a restaurant or heavy cooking. Grease cools and hardens against the pipe wall, so the longer you leave it the harder the block. If you smell the trap or see it spilling over, it is already overdue and the outlet is choking.

Why does my floor trap keep blocking up?

A floor trap usually keeps blocking because hair, soap scum and sediment build up faster than the line clears, or because the trap sits at a low point with poor fall. We clear it, then check whether the gradient, the trap grating or a partial block further down the pipe is the real cause. Fixing the cause stops the weekly choke instead of just buying you a few days.

Will clearing the drain damage my pipes?

No, when done correctly clearing a drain does not damage sound pipes. We match the method to the pipe, so PVC and old GI lines get the right rod or a controlled jet pressure rather than brute force. If a pipe is already cracked or corroded, the clearing can expose the fault, and we will show you so you can decide on a repair rather than patch over it.

Keep cooking oil, grease, coffee grounds, rice and food scraps out of the kitchen sink, and keep wipes, tissue and sanitary items out of the toilet. Oil hardens and coats the pipe, and wipes do not break down like toilet paper. A cheap sink strainer and a grease trap that gets emptied on time prevent most of the chokes we get called out for.
